The Prince George's County Planning Department of The Maryland National-Capital Park and Planning Commission is seeking a Planner III to join our planning team. The Department provides land use planning for the physical development of Prince George's County, Maryland. As the second most populous county in Maryland, Prince George's has a population of approximately 900,000 residents and is home to The University of Maryland at College Park, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and Joint Base Andrews.  Prince George's County is also home to many attractions such as Northwest Stadium (formerly FedEx Field), National Harbor, and Six Flags Amusement Park. The Planner III will play an important role in the review of applicable public and private land development applications through various processes. The position also requires the ability to apply land use regulations and to meet deadlines. The duties of this position include technical review and the preparation of staff reports and memoranda for site specific applications and other projects as assigned. The Planner III classification often serves as a team leader or project manager on certain  public projects. This position may lead or participate in planning studies which involves coordinating and reviewing the work of other planning staff and serving as an internal resource for subject areas of expertise. 

Examples of Important Duties:

 

  • Reviews and analyzes development applications for conformance with applicable regulations and master plans. Types of development applications include preliminary plans, mandatory referrals and water and sewer change requests. 
  • Applies knowledge of planning standards, codes, and plans to develop alternatives to resolve identified planning problems. Works with interested parties to negotiate solutions. As needed, conducts site inspections as needed and incorporates field observations into recommendations.
  • Assesses adequacy of plans and public facilities. Evaluates land use for public facilities, property acquisition, parks, etc. As needed, conducts or participates in planning studies in support of the planning process to research and help develop solutions to problems.
  • Writes and develops staff reports, correspondence, plans, and other materials. Explains technical planning issues and concepts to support research conclusions and recommendations. Develops and designs charts, graphs, maps, statistical data, and other exhibits as appropriate.
  • Presents and defends plans and recommendations to the Planning Board or District Council under the guidance of the supervisor/manager. Makes presentations to a variety of individuals and groups (Planning Board, County Council, community, business developers) for the purpose of communicating planning issues, studies, laws, procedures, recommendations, etc.
  • Responds to general inquiries from citizens, developers, engineers, architects, attorneys concerning development, actions of the Planning Board, planning regulations, etc.
  • Serves as Departmental expert or liaison on one or more unique countywide planning matters, including but not limited to adequacy of public facilities.
  • Serves on committees, task forces, special intra-department teams for the purpose of contributing technical expertise or providing staff support to achieve goals and objectives of work effort. May represent department as designated by supervisor or department head. Staff support may include administrative and logistical tasks.
  • Serve as project manager of assigned countywide studies that address various subject matter, including but not limited to: impacts of growth on public services and infrastructure.

The M-NCPPC offers a competitive salary range of $73,523 to $132,614 (salary is commensurate with education and experience) at the Planner III level with excellent benefits including generous leave, extensive health coverage, deferred compensation plan, and employee pension plan.  

The Prince George’s County Planning Department is conveniently located in Largo, MD near Metro and I-495.
